When to Claim Social Security at 62, 67 or 70

Take a worker whose full benefit at 67 would be 2,000 dollars a month. Claim at 62 and the check is 1,400 dollars. Wait until 70 and it is 2,480 dollars. That is a gap of 1,080 dollars every month, for life, decided by a single form.

Take a worker whose full benefit at 67 would be 2,000 dollars a month. Claim at 62 and the check is 1,400 dollars. Wait until 70 and it is 2,480 dollars. That is a gap of 1,080 dollars every month, for life, decided by a single form. Deciding when to claim Social Security is one of the few retirement choices that cannot be cleanly undone, and it is often made in a hurry.

I walk clients through this choice with numbers rather than rules of thumb. Below are the actual percentages, the break-even ages, how marriage changes the answer, and the situations where claiming early is the better move even though most articles tell you to wait.

How the Claiming Age Changes Your Monthly Check

Your benefit is built around your primary insurance amount, the figure you receive at full retirement age. For anyone born in 1960 or later, full retirement age is 67. Claim earlier and the benefit is permanently reduced. Claim later and you earn delayed retirement credits of 8 percent a year until 70, when the credits stop.

Claiming ageShare of full benefitMonthly check on a 2,000 dollar benefit
6270%1,400
6480%1,600
67100%2,000
68108%2,160
70124%2,480

Cost-of-living adjustments apply on top of whichever amount you lock in, so a larger starting check also grows by larger dollar amounts each year. There is no benefit to waiting past 70.

The Break-Even Age, Worked Out

The break-even age is the point where the total collected by waiting catches up with the total collected by starting early.

  • 62 versus 70: by 70, the early claimer has received 96 checks of 1,400 dollars, or 134,400 dollars. The person who waited gets 1,080 dollars more per month, so it takes about 124 months to catch up. Break-even lands near age 80 and a half.
  • 67 versus 70: the early claimer collects 72,000 dollars over three years. The 480 dollar monthly difference takes about 150 months to close, so break-even is around 82 and a half.

A 65 year old American today has roughly even odds of living past the mid-80s, and a married couple has a good chance that at least one partner reaches 90. That is why waiting usually wins on paper. But averages are not your health history.

When Claiming Early Actually Makes Sense

The standard advice is to delay to 70 if you possibly can. I think that advice is pushed too hard. Delaying is insurance against a long life, and you pay the premium out of your own savings, and it is not the right trade for everyone.

Claiming at 62 to 64 can be reasonable when:

  • You have a serious health condition, or a family history where few relatives reached 80.
  • You are single, have little in savings, and waiting would mean running up credit card debt or draining an emergency fund to cover bills.
  • You are the lower earner in a married couple and the higher earner is delaying. Your own check matters less to the survivor than theirs does.

What does not justify claiming early is panic about the trust fund. Current projections show the retirement trust fund running short in the mid-2030s, after which incoming payroll taxes would still cover roughly 80 percent of scheduled benefits. A cut of that size would apply to early and late claimers alike, so it is a weak reason to lock in a permanent 30 percent reduction.

How Marriage Changes When to Claim Social Security

For couples, the question is really about two lives, not one.

Spousal Benefits

A spouse can receive up to 50 percent of the worker's full benefit, if the spouse claims at their own full retirement age. Claiming earlier shrinks that share. Spousal benefits do not earn delayed credits, so a lower-earning spouse gains nothing by waiting past 67 for the spousal amount.

Survivor Benefits

When one spouse dies, the survivor keeps the larger of the two checks, including any delayed credits the deceased earned. This is the strongest reason for the higher earner to wait. If that person claims at 62, the widow or widower may live on the reduced 70 percent figure for 20 years or more.

A common plan that works well: the lower earner claims around full retirement age or a little earlier, and the higher earner holds out to 70.

Working While Collecting Before Full Retirement Age

If you claim before 67 and keep working, the earnings test applies. For every 2 dollars you earn above the annual limit, which was 23,400 dollars in 2025 and rises most years, 1 dollar of benefits is withheld. In the calendar year you reach full retirement age, a higher limit applies and only 1 dollar in 3 is withheld.

Withheld money is not lost. At full retirement age, Social Security recalculates your benefit to credit the months that were held back. Still, many people who claim at 62 and keep a full-time job end up receiving very little for years, which defeats the point of claiming early.

Bridging the Gap With Your Own Savings

Delaying only works if something pays the bills between retirement and the claiming date. For most people that means drawing from a 401(k) or IRA in their 60s. That can actually lower lifetime taxes, because withdrawals in those low-income years may fall in the 10 or 12 percent bracket, and smaller balances later mean smaller required distributions.

If your savings are thin, consider a partial bridge: work part-time to 65 or 66, then claim at full retirement age. If you started saving late, the steps in catching up on retirement savings after a late start pair well with this, and capturing your full 401(k) employer match while still working adds to the bridge fund.

One timing trap: Medicare starts at 65 no matter when you claim Social Security. If you are not yet collecting benefits, you must enroll in Medicare yourself, or face late penalties that last for life.

FAQ

Can I change my mind after claiming Social Security?

Within 12 months of first claiming, you can withdraw your application once, but you must repay every dollar received. After full retirement age, you can also suspend benefits to earn delayed credits until 70.

Does claiming at 62 reduce my spouse's benefit?

Your early claim does not reduce your spouse's spousal benefit while you are alive, but it does reduce the survivor benefit they would inherit if you die first.

Are Social Security benefits taxed?

Up to 85 percent of benefits can be subject to federal income tax once combined income passes certain thresholds. A number of states also tax benefits, so check your state's rules before estimating net income.

A Practical Next Step

Log in to your my Social Security account and write down your estimated checks at 62, 67 and 70. Then estimate your realistic life expectancy, list what your savings can cover each year, and for couples plan the higher earner's claim around the survivor.
